Official Launch of U3A Singapore

31/03/2014

This took place at the Possibility Room of the National Library Building on 31 Mar 2014 and was well attended by members and guests including representatives from MOE, NCSS and C3A. Mr Lim Hoy Pick, SACE’s Founder President, officiated at the launch. He pointed out that by the year 2030, 23% of our population will be above 65 years old. The implication for adult education is that there will be increasing demand for lifelong learning among senior citizens in our community.  Therefore, it is timely that we set up U3A Singapore to organise educational programs and activities catering to the learning needs of senior citizens.

U3A or University of the Third Age is a worldwide movement and its establishment in Singapore has been championed by the Singapore Association for Continuing Education (SACE). This official launch of U3A Singapore was preceded by two years of hard work in developing its strategic plan, operational model and trial applications. SACE VP Irene Wee provided an overview on the development of U3A in Singapore and this was followed by a talk on “The Psychology of Ageing” by President Goh Kim Seng.
